The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) Michigan Section is hosting it annual workshop on June 13-14, 2023 in Roscommon, Michigan. The 12th Annual AIPG Michigan Section Workshop, held at the McMullen Conference Center, is an annual training event focused on providing quality technical information and case studies.  The topic for this year’s workshop is The Basics to the Latest in Contaminant Fate & Transport.

Chemours Company is the recipient of the U.S. EPA’s first-ever enforcement action for PFAS discharges with the Clean Water Act (CWA). The EPA is ordering Chemours Company to take corrective measures to address pollution from PFAS in stormwater and effluent discharges for a facility near Parkersburg, West Virginia.  The EPA stated that discharge levels of PFAS exceed the levels established in the facility’s CWA permit. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a public hearing on May 4, 2023  to hear comments on the proposed PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR).  The public hearing was a follow-up of the EPA’s announcement on March 14, 2023 about the PFAS NPDWR proposed rule.

Since its initial publication in 2020, EPA Method 533 has become a leading approved analytical test method for the analysis of PFAS in drinking water.  During this time, Merit Laboratories has analyzed thousands of samples utilizing EPA Method 533 for drinking water.  In the publication of EPA Method 533 in 2020, Merit Laboratories was just a few national laboratories acknowledged in the approved method for PFAS testing in drinking water released by the U.S. EPA.

DoD Provides Data Base of PFAS Off-Base Drinking Water Testing Results

The Department of Defense (DoD) conducts sampling of drinking water off-base to ensure it identifies potential impacts of PFAS resulting from DoD activities. Off-base drinking water includes non-DoD drinking water systems and private wells located outside the installation boundary. The DoD provides final test results of off-base drinking water in accordance with Section 345 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022.

The U.S. EPA Issues the Next TSCA Test Order Under National PFAS Testing Strategy

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) formally announced the issuance of the next Toxic Substances Contract Act (TSCA) test order requiring PFAS testing.  The new test order is being made under the National PFAS Testing Strategy. The EPA announced the action on January 4, 2023, which orders companies to conduct and submit testing for the PFAS substance HFPO. HFPO (CAS # 428-59-1), also known as trifluoro(trifluoromethyl)oxirane, is used in plastics manufacturing.
